Our vision for this public library competition was to create a meeting hub for the community and spaces for intercultural and generational exchange. The structure is set into an existing axis to connect with the surrounding city and consist of 4 floors and a large courtyard garden. While the exterior reflects the upward movement of the surrounding Alps that engulf this town, the interior is a warm environment of locally sourced wood, open spaces, suspended staircases with a small reflecting pool below. The open floor plan for the library’s collection of books and studying areas allow airflow and natural light to flood the rooms. Brise soleil and double pane glazing provide protection from the hot summer sun but permit cooler winter light to enter, creating year-round comfort for users and staff.
