VITO'S GARDEN - S.FELICE CIRCEO (LT) 2019

A small, lush courtyard ready to serve a multi-generational family. The garden is a renovation to an existing summer home in a four-family complex in the southern coast of Lazio, San Felice Circeo. The clients wanted to revitalize the space that, at the time, was overly exposed to the Italian summer sun and lacked amenities to make the space pleasurable and livable at different hours of the day and for each member of the family. The solution was to construct a wooden L-shaped pergola with sunshade slats that would, at the same time, block the hot sun but permit in-direct light and air circulation. Grape vines were added to pergola to add additional summer-shade but, with deciduous leaves, allow the cooler spring and autumn light to flood the space. Elements to provide spaces for varied uses were designed specifically for the odd-angled corners. Flowing from the west-facing kitchen door is a covered path leading to a BBQ island and adjacent dining area. From there another sitting area with pillows and cushions for relaxing, chatting or pre-dinner aperitivo. Slightly divided, but still connect to the sitting area is a hot tub and outdoor shower. The central area is left open for sunbathing or children playing. All materials for this design are locally sourced and suit the local style and ambiance. Garden beds are filled with sedums, grasses, agave and other plants well-suited for this seaside spot.
